HERAT CITY/PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Eight militants and as many policemen have been killed in separate incidents in central Logar and western Herat provinces, officials said on Thursday.
Five policemen were killed during a clash with militants on Tor Ghundai highway in Herat late on Wednesday, police spokesman Col. Abdur Rauf Ahmadi told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the policemen were guarding a convoy of fuel tankers travelling from the Tor Ghundai border area to Herat City, the provincial capital.
A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, claimed the five policemen were killed and their weapons seized by militants.
Elsewhere, eight militants and three policemen were killed when insurgents stormed a police post in the Baraki Barak district of Logar province.
District chief, Mohammad Rahim Amin, said the clash took place in the morning. Another three policemen and six militants were wounded.
