KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran on Wednesday poured scorn on a US media report that it was recruiting Afghan refugees to Syria to fight against the rebels in the Middle Eastern country.
Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported the elite Revolutionary Guards were offering Iranian residency and $500 monthly stipends to thousands of Afghans to fight in Syrian.
But a foreign ministry spokeswoman in Tehran rejected the claim as “completely unfounded” and “aimed at damaging Iran’s reputation in Afghanistan.”
In a statement, Marzieh Afkham called the news report “an insult to the people of Afghanistan. She asked the newspaper to apologise to them.
