KABUL defence ministers, an alliance spokesperson said on Thursday.

It would be an important meeting in preparations for a NATO summit in Wales in September, Oana Lungescu told Pajhwok Afghan News.

“Afghanistan will be discussed at the meeting on June 3-4, to be attended by defence ministers from the 28 NATO countries and 20 ISAF partners,” she said.

Defence Minister Bismillah Khan Mohammadi would meet his counterparts, who will congratulate the Afghan people on the conduct of the first round of elections.

He will brief participants on security preparations for the runoff vote, scheduled for June 14.  They will also share views on completing the ISAF mission at the end of this year.

“I expect allies and partners to welcome the recent US announcement as a significant contribution to our commitment to Afghanistan,” the spokeswoman said.

On Tuesday, US President Barack Obama decided to have 9,800 American troops in Afghanistan at the beginning of 2015 if the new president agreed to sign the bilateral security agreement.

The US would withdraw all its troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2016. Obama said. “We will only sustain a military presence after 2014 if the Afghan government signs the BSA.”

The Resolute Support mission could be launched once the necessary agreements were signed and a legal framework put in place, the NATO spokesperson explained.
