KABUL would be one of his top priorities because sportsmen could play a key role in doing away with poverty and starvation.

Addressing thousands of sportsmen at the Badam Bagh area in Kabul, Abdullah said he was thankful to sportsmen for supporting him in the previous round of presidential elections.

“Our promises are not mere slogans. If succeeded, I will consider the development of sports one of my duties and I have a programme in this regard,” said Abdullah, who later survived an assassination attempt that left six people killed and more than two dozens injured.

Abdullah was returning from a rally when a car suicide bomber targeted his campaign motorcade.

Later Abdullah said he was unhurt in the bomb blast but some of his bodyguards were slightly injured.

“You have won many events on international level. We feel pride that you are part of our team,” Abdullah told the sportsmen.

“In every society where people love sports, poverty and starvation go away,” he said, promising to facilitate and assist national sports teams.
