FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): A man and a woman were killed and a third person sustained burn injuries when struck separately by thunderstorms in northeastern Badakhshan province, where flash floods destroyed several homes, an official said on Saturday.
The lightening events took place in Khwahan district late on Friday, the governor’s spokesman Ahmad Naveed Frotan told Pajhwok Afghan News. He said the victims included a man and a woman both 22 and 20 years old respectively.
A provincial council member, Abdul Wahid Taibi, who is resident of Khwahan district, said the man was working in his fields when hit by lightning.
The woman was outside her house when got hit by lightning and died and a third person, also a farmer working in his fields, was injured in a similar incident.
Frotan said dozens of residential buildings were destroyed as a result of flash floods triggered by heavy rains.
The flooding also washed away crops on several hectares of land in Khwahan, Raghistan and Yawan districts.
