KABUL-based terrorist outfit, in Kabul.

Frontrunner in the June 14 presidential runoff election Abdullah’s convoy came under a suicide car bomb attack and so soon after a roadside bomb blast.

A dozen people were killed and 40 others wounded in the back-to-back explosions which damaged a number of shops and vehicles in the area west of Kabul.

But Abdullah, a former foreign minister in Karzai’s previous cabinet, escaped unhurt in both the blasts.

The National Security Council, which met with President Karzai in the chair, discussed security arrangements for the presidential runoff vote, a statement from the Presidential Palace said.

Security officials briefed in detail the meeting participants on the terror attack on Abdullah’s convoy.

They said initial investigations showed the attack was carried out by a foreign intelligence agency through Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistani terror group that has been active in Indian-administered Kashmir. They said the group was hell-bent on disrupting the runoff.

The NSC strongly condemned the assassination attempt on Abdullah and directed the authorities concerned to further investigate it.

The council also directed the Ministry of Interior to make every effort at ensuring foolproof security of the two presidential runners and their running mates.

Security officials said 906 out of 6263 polling centers would remain closed on the election day.
