KABUL (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Wednesday said it had finalised the list of a total of 6,365 polling centres to be open nationwide during Saturday’s presidential runoff election.
The IEC in a statement said the number and locations of polling centres had been determined based on assessments provided by the Ministry of Interior (MoI).
It said security of voters was a top priority for both the IEC and the MoI and thus polling centres would be open in areas, which the MOI believed could be reasonably secured.
These polling centres contain a total of 23,136 polling stations — more in number than opened on April 5 — in order to reduce the average number of voters at each polling station and eventually reduce the time required by each voter to cast his/her ballot, the statement said.
More than 40 percent of polling stations (9,324) are reserved exclusively for women and equipped with female election and security staff.
Voters may visit IEC website (www.iec.org.af/) to view the entire list of confirmed polling centres and their locations.
The IEC encouraged voters to cast their ballots in the way they did on April 5.
However, ballots may be cast at any polling centre nationwide during the runoff.
