GHAZNI (Pajhwok): Taliban may release kidnapped Kandahar University teachers after the June 14 runoff election, officials said on Thursday.
Some days back, the insurgents abducted 34 Kandahar University teachers in the Qarabagh district of southern Ghazni province.
One of the teachers, who offered resistance, was injured. The incident took place on the Kabul-Kandahar highway, the spokesman for the Kandahar governor told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Ghazni Deputy Governor Mohammad Ali Ahmadi said the teachers were abducted by foreign rebels. He hoped the captives would be released after the election.
“Taliban have told tribal elders from Andar district the teachers have been abducted because of their involvement in the electoral process. The militants have promised the teachers will be released,” he added.
Taliban were divided on the issue and the Afghan fighters — unhappy over the teachers’ abduction — asked foreign rebels to set them free, he concluded.
