JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Sixteen Taliban militants and two Afghan Local Police (ALP) members have been killed during separate clashes in eastern Nangarhar and Laghman province, officials said on Sunday.

Nangarhar police spokesman Col. Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal told Pajhwok Afghan News insurgents using heavy and light weapons attacked a security base in the Sherzad district on Saturday.

Eight attackers were killed and 14 others were wounded after police retaliated, he said, adding the rest of assailants fled the area.

In Laghman, a joint Afghan National Army and police and ALP force conducted a series of operations in the Bombai area of Daulat Shah district on Sunday.

Six Pakistanis were among eight insurgents killed during clashes with the joint force, the governor’s spokesman Sarhadi Zwak said.

He said two insurgents were captured alive and that the dead included the brother of a notorious militant leader Zarjan.

“Dead bodies of the militants are still in the area, where security forces confiscated eight Kalashnikovs and a rocket launcher,” Zwak said.

During the operations, he said, two ALP members were killed and two ANA soldiers slightly wounded.

The Taliban have so far said nothing about the clashes in Nangarhar and Laghman.
