Nuristani rejects call for Amarkhel’s suspension

KABUL) on Monday rejected Dr. Abdullah Abdullah’s call for suspending its secretary Ziaul Haq Amarkhel.    

At a late-night news conference on Sunday, the presidential runner had asked for Amarkhel’s suspension following allegations that he was dispatching electoral materials to the 21^st district before being stopped by police.  

But Amarkhel refuted the accusation as false, saying the electoral materials were being taken to polling centers that had run out of ballot papers. He called the action disrespect to independence of the commission and interference in its affairs.  

Addressing a press conference in Kabul, IEC Chairman Ahmad Yousaf Nuristani promised if they found evidence of attempted fraud, the issue would be investigated and legal action taken.    

“I hope a neutral delegation will be formed to thoroughly probe the issue and put an end to it,” he said. Of the 16 ballot boxes, eight were supposed to be transported to polling centres in Kabul and the rest to Sarobi district.

But Amarullah Aman, a member of the Reforms and Unanimity team, said none of the polling centers had run out of ballot papers in Sarobi and slammed the act as fraud by the IEC secretary.

Nuristani told reporters ballot boxes had been shifted from a number of provinces to Kabul. All materials from Panjsher and Parwan provinces have been received and the process will be completed soon.

They would announce the results on time, as this time there were only two presidential candidates, Nuristani said, adding: “Around 7 million people participated in the runoff.”
