KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): The Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) on Tuesday said it had registered 40 complaints of anomalies in Saturday’s runoff election in southern Kandahar province.

IECC regional chief Marwand Waziri told Pajhwok Afghan News some of the complaints were against presidential candidates and others against election workers.

Most of the complainants had accused IEC employees of working in favour of a specific candidate, he said, adding the claims could affect the election results if proved authentic.

However, Waziri said the number of complaints filed after the runoff polls were fewer than those registered after the April elections because of IEC’s good management and efforts to avoid past mistakes.

The process to register complaints came to a close on Monday night and addressing them would be started later.

Kandahar IEC chief Eng Abdul Hadi Dawari said they had been delivered ballot boxes from a number of districts and all polling stations in Kandahar City without any problem.

He said ballot boxes from the remaining districts, including Ghorak, Nesh, Mianshin and Maroof would be airlifted to the provincial IEC office until Tuesday afternoon.

He said there had been fewer incidents of fraud during the second round of election due to the presence of election observers in all polling stations.

Another reason behind transparency in the election was the removal of 6,66 IEC workers accused of fraud after the April elections, he said.

Dawari added more than 300,000 people of Kandahar had cast their votes in the runoff election.
