SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): Three people were killed and five others wounded during an overnight gunbattle between security forces and insurgents in Shiberghan, the capital of northern Jawzjan province, officials said on Friday.

Two militants and a policeman were killed in the two-hour clash that erupted in Khwaja Gogardak area of the city at 8pm, the provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

At least three policemen and two rebels were wounded in the fire exchange in an area where gas installations are located. The incident was touched off by a militant attack on a police post in the locality, Jawzjani added.

Shiberghan Civil Hospital Director Dr. Mohammad Haroon confirmed receiving the body of one policeman and three injured people from the clash site.

On the other hand, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed four policemen were killed and their weapons snatched by the insurgents as a result of the firefight.
