KABUL, a renowned human rights campaigner claimed on Sunday.
Nicholas Duckworth of Amnesty International made the allegation during a meeting with President Hamid Karzai at his office in Kabul. The team she headed briefed Karzai on AI’s investigations into 10 incidents of civilian deaths in Afghanistan during ISAF operations over the past five years.
A statement from the Presidential Palace quoted Duckworth as saying that the foreign troops lacked the spirit to offer themselves for accountability over collateral damage.
In response, the president said: “I’m so pleased that you have worked on an important issue that has been the real cause of differences between the US and Afghanistan.”
He called for a full stop to civilian casualties and called for joint efforts in this regard. “For years, I have focused on ways of preventing civilian casualties,” Karzai told the delegation.
