KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Pakistani forces once again attacked the Maroof district of southern Kandahar province on Friday, local officials alleged.

A woman and a child were killed in the shelling that left three compounds damaged in the Sra Shah area of the town, the governor’s spokesman said.

Dawa Khan Minapal told Pajhwok Afghan News the latest instance of Pakistani aggression was resisted by residents of the remote border area.

As a result of stout resistance from the people, the aggressors were forced into retreating to their positions across the Durand Line.

Minapal added reinforcements had been dispatched to the district to deter possible incursions. The incident is currently under investigation.

Maroof district’s administrative head Toryalai Sadat accused Pakistani troops of firing hundreds of rockets into the town until 2pm, causing several casualties.

He said the provincial government had been informed of the trenches dug up by Pakistani forces in the area.

In mid-May Pakistani troops strayed into the district, killing a policeman. They shelled check-posts of Afghan forces and tried to construct new military installations.

Maroof is located 190 kilometres from Kandahar City, sharing a 155-km border with Pakistan. It also borders Atghar, Shamalzai, Shinkai, and Seori districts of Zabul province.
