KABUL’s southwestern Balochistan province, on Thursday night.

Pakistani TV channels, monitored here, reported that the unidentified gunmen killed a news agency bureau chief, a reporter and an accountant in their office on Jinnah Road.

After killing Online Bureau Chief Irshad Ahmed Mastoi, reporter Ghulam Rasool and accountant Mohammed Younus, the assailants managed to flee the crowded locality of the city, Geo News said.

“All victims received multiple bullets,” Razzaq Cheema, the city police chief, told DawnNews. Police and paramilitary personnel reached the office and started an initial investigation into the shooting.

Mastoi, working as assignment editor for the TV channel ARY, was also the general secretary of the the Balochsitan Union of Journalists (BUJ). The victims’ bodies were taken to the Quetta Civil Hospital in Quetta.

A large number of journalists reached the hospital, chanting slogans against what they called the cold blooded murder of their colleagues. BUJ denounced the incident as an attack on the freedom of expression.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) recently called Pakistan the “most dangerous country in the world” for working journalists. On the RSF Press Freedom Index, Pakistan is 158th among 180 countries.
