KABUL (Pajhwok): Top British and American officials have urged the presidential candidates to honour their agreement on the formation of government of national unity.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron phoned Dr Ashraf Ghani and Dr Abdullah on Wednesday afternoon about their ongoing negotiations to form such a government.

His spokesman said the prime minister urged both to continue to work through the process set out by US Secretary of State John Kerry and to form a unity government as quickly as possible.

He emphasised the enormous prize at stake for the Afghan people – to secure their democratic future – and that he hoped the process could be completed by the NATO summit.

The Wales summit represented an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in Afghanistan over the last 10 years and to look at how NATO allies could work with the new government, he said.

Separately, US Special Representative Dan Feldman met the candidates and other key stakeholders in Kabul, including the UNAMA head Jan Kubis.

Feldman reiterated the need to conclude the electoral process in a timely way that honoured the millions of votes cast by the Afghan people and provides the legitimacy for a government of national unity.
