KABUL (UNAMA) on Thursday said all-efforts should be made to ensure civilians were protected during military operations.

Jan Kubis, the secretary-general’s special representative and UNAMA head, said: “All efforts should be taken to ensure civilians are protected during military operations.”

In a statement, he said: “I once again strongly urge the parties to the conflict to do everything in their power to avoid any actions that may lead to civilian casualties.”

He expressed condolences to the families of the civilians killed and injured in airstrikes in eastern Kunar province. At least eight civilians were killed and another 10 injured in a military operation in Narang district.

While noting that a presidential delegation and ISAF were separately investigating the incident, UNAMA highlighted the need for prompt, thorough and transparent investigations.
