KABUL (Pajhwok): The feuding presidential hopefuls on Monday briefed President Hamid Karzai on progress in negotiations, promising to sign a deal soon.

Both Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and Dr. Abdullah Abdullah said a breakthrough had been achieved in talks on a government of national unity, Karzai’s office said.

During a meeting at the Presidential Palace, also attended by the two vice-presidents, the candidates hoped they would sign the agreement to soon in the presence of the president and other dignitaries.

Karzai once again urged the presidential runners to work swiftly to conclude the agreement and thereby address mounting concerns at the dragging electoral deadlock.

At the meeting, which took place a day after the nationwide vote audit process was completed, the president assured the candidates of all possible help in expediting the process.
