KABUL (Pajhwok): The presidential runners on Friday informed top political and judicial leaders of “important progress” in their negotiations on ending the prevailing electoral impasse.
During a meeting at the Presidential Palace, Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and Dr. Abdullah Abdullah told former jihadi figures and leaders of the three pillars of state that their dialogue had been fruitful.
A statement from the Presidential Palace said President Hamid Karzai, Sibghatullah Mujaddedi, Syed Ahmad Gilani, Abdur Rab Rassoul Sayyaf, Vice-Presidents Yunus Qanuni and Karim Khalili attended the meeting.
Chief Justice Abdul Salam Azimi, Wolesi Jirga Qayamuddin Kashaf, Haji Din Mohammad, Mohammad, Ismail Khan and Gul Rahman Qazi were also present.
President Karzai voiced his pleasure over the headway the candidates had made, hoping the participants would soon witness the signing of the final deal. Arrangements for the new president’s inauguration were also discussed.
The participants expressed their satisfaction with the progress, saying prolonged election process that had created multiple political, security and economic problems would soon come to an end.
The high-level meeting comes a day after the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) conveyed its decision on complaints from the presidential runners to the poll panel.
