KABUL (Pajhwok): The political agreement on a unity government has ended the electoral deadlock and steered the nation out of difficult phase, President Hamid Karzai said at the last Cabinet meeting he chaired on Monday.

Karzai hailed the election result as a major milestone in the nation-building process, hoping the peaceful power transfer would help democracy strike root in Afghanistan, according to a statement from the Presidential Palace.

Congratulating president-elect Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and his chief executive Dr. Abdullah, the outgoing leader urged them to bury the past feuds and strive to serve the nation together. He wished them all success.

The president said in the past one decade a foundation had been laid for Afghanistan’s political, economic, social and cultural growth. He hoped the new set-up would build on the achievements.

“In this regard, I would also be supporting the new government in its endeavours for a stable and prosperous future,” he promised. Karzai said all achievements in the past one decade had been possible due to the hard working team behind him.

His deputy Muhammad Yunus Qanuni also praised the deal on the unity government. Looking back at the Karzai era, he said the freedom of expression had helped strengthen democracy in the country

Vice-President Karim Khalili and other Cabinet members commended the government’s achievements over the past 13 years.

Before the inauguration of President Hamid Karzai in late 2001, they recalled, key state institutions were almost non-existent.

But there had since been remarkable progress in areas of economy, security, culture, democracy, freedom of the press, the participants noted.

It was the last meeting of the Karzai-led Council of Ministers. The president will be given a farewell reception tomorrow. Provincial officials will be in attendance.
