KABUL on Monday agreed on the need for intensifying bilateral cooperation in meeting economic, social and security challenges confronting the two neighbouring countries.

The agreement came at a meeting between President Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and his Pakistani counterpart Mamnoon Hussain in Kabul soon after the former’s inauguration, a spokesman for the Pakistan embassy said.

Akhtar Munir Khan, speaking to Pajhwok Afghan News, quoted Hussain as saying that the neighbours enjoyed deep-rooted ties based on a shared faith, culture and history. He called for building trust and deepening cooperation in all areas of mutual interest.

While congratulated Ahmadzai on behalf of the people and government of Pakistan, the visiting president hoped Kabul-Islamabad ties would be strengthened under his dynamic leadership.

The spokesman said Hussain reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to continue to play an effective role in promotion of peace, stability and prosperity in Afghanistan.

Dr. Ahmadzai assured he would closely work with Pakistan to promote economic cooperation and address common challenges such as militancy, extremism and poverty.

Both the leaders stressed the need for promoting people-to-people contact, which would help improve understanding between the two countries.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah Abdullah also called on Hussain and exchanged views with him on matters of bilateral importance. The president congratulated him on assumption of office.

Hussain appreciated the role of both leaders in formation of the national unity government. He said peace and prosperity of both the countries was inter-linked and it was in their interest to jointly overcome the challenges being faced by them.
