KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai on Saturday called upon the armed insurgents to give up fighting and arrive at the negotiating table to resolve the conflict through a political and intra-Afghan dialogue.

Ahmadzai was speaking at the Presidential Palace, where he offered Eidul Adha prayers as the Afghans celebrated the first day of the annual religious festival with religious zeal.

Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah, former president Hamid Karzai, Ahmadzai’s and Abdullah’s deputies, Wolesi Jirga leader Abdul Rab Rassoul Sayyaf and Cabinet ministers, lawmakers, ambassadors of Islamic countries and senior military officials were present on the occasion.

While congratulating the Muslim Ummah.

He praised former president Hamid Karzai’s efforts at ensuring a peaceful transfer of power and uniting the nation with his political wisdom and leadership.

He also thanked Abdullah for his efforts to resolve people’s problems within the framework of the unity government. “Our nation has always been united, it cannot afford divisions,” the newly-inaugurated president said.

Ahmadzai said the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) had barred Muslims from fighting during Eid days, urging the rebels to stop fighting.

The president said war was no solution to any problem and the only way was peace. “Political issues should be resolved in a political way and through intra-Afghan dialogue,” he stressed.

The new leader also paid tribute to security forces for their heroism and efforts to maintain security and peace in the country.

Calling himself and Abdullah as servants to the nation, Ahmadzai renewed his resolve to honour their pledges. “We have a strong determination to bring peace to the country.”

Referring to the reopening of the Kabul Bank scandal and taking initial steps to resolve the problem of insecurity and control food prices, he said they would practically show the nation that they were its servants.
