KABUL (Pajhwok): Scores of residents protested on Friday against the publication of a blasphemous article in a Kabul-based newspaper.
The National Unity Front organised the protest meeting after Juma prayers at the Eidgah Mosque in the capital. The protestors called for serious action against the newspaper and its contributors.
In their speeches, participants said they were trying for parliamentary approval of a law that inflicted severe punishment on the individuals who insulted the religion.
Wolesi Jirga (lower house) member Shahzada Shahid said he was pursing the issue in the assembly. A law against such outrageous acts would be passed soon, he added.
Haji Farid, a leader of the party, called for the government to investigate the profane writing and take stringent action against the author as soon as possible.

The article has drawn strong condemnation from readers, civil society figures. CEO Abdullah has called the article against religious beliefs and declared the government would seriously investigate it.
