FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Fifteen militants, including Chechen and Uzbek fighters, have been killed in the Warduj district of northeastern Badakhshan province, an official claimed on Wednesday.

Police spokesman Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai told Pajhwok Afghan News the insurgents were killed during operations over the last 24 hours in the Sofyan area of the restive district.

Four Taliban commanders were among the dead, the police official said, adding that the Uzbeks killed were members of Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and they were fighting alongside the Afghan rebels.

Ahmadzai said the militants’ bodies remained on the battlefield. At least seven fighters were injured in clashes with the security personnel.

On the other hand, the Taliban claimed seizing five security checkpoints as a result of fighting in the area. The group’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said 10 security personnel were killed and 30 others kidnapped.
