In its latest biannual report to Congress earlier in the week, the Pentagon said alleged the existence of terrorist safe havens in Pakistan, from where proxy forces were operating against Afghanistan and India.
Pakistan Embassy spokesman Akhtar Munir Khan told Pajhwok Afghan News that Islamabad took serious exception to comments in the US Department of Defense report “Progress Towards Security and Stability in Afghanistan”.
He said Adviser to Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz lodged the protest with US Ambassador Richard Olson at the Foreign Ministry in Islamabad.
“Such allegations are of particular concern at this point when the Pakistan government has launched comprehensive operations against militants in North Waziristan,” he added.
The operation ‘Zarb-e-Azb’ had been welcomed internationally, including in the US, the Pakistani press attaché claimed
The offensive had successfully eliminated terrorist hideouts and was directed against all militants, without any distinction, he said. “We hope issues will be seen in their correct perspective.”
