Afghan rugby side beat British Embassy

KABUL (Pajhwok): The British Embassy on Sunday played a rugby match against Mamozai Youth Club, whose players wore shirts donated by the Scottish Rugby Football Union. 

Scotland has a great tradition of rugby union and won the first international match in 1871 against England in Edinburgh, the British Embassy said.

Some of the Scottish sporting pedigree must have rubbed off on the Mamozai players, who after a slow start demonstrated their lightening pace down the wing. The Afghan side eventually won the game.

The match was played to celebrate Scotland’s national day. Rugby is taking off in Afghanistan in Afghanistan. 

He hoped the national team, which has played in several international tournaments, would be able to compete in the Rugby World Cup in the future. Next year the Rugby World Cup will be held in England.

Speaking on Scotland’s national day, British Prime Minister David Cameron said: “Less than three months ago the people of Scotland voted to keep the UK together, and I was just one of the millions of people who were relieved, proud and delighted that Scotland decided to stay.

“There was one big message at the heart of our campaign: We can have a strong UK and a strong Scotland – with its own identity and achievements to celebrate. That’s what St Andrew’s day is all about,” he added.
