KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran has promised to extend visas of Afghan refugees in the neighboring country for six months, Deputy Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Mohaqiq said on Sunday.

Addressing journalists in Kabul, Mohaqiq said Iranian officials had promised to extend visas for 450,000 Afghan refugees for another six months. He said more than one million Afghans lived illegally in Iran.

He added during his visit to Iran, officials also promised allowing Afghan children to go to school and a cut in their fees.

He said a delegation from ministries of refugees and repatriations, interior, labour and social affairs, public health and counter-narcotics would be sent to Iran for talks on the future of refugees.

Iran also promised  500 scholarships for Afghan students and would soon send a representative to Kabul to address the technical issues with the Ministry of Higher Education, he added.

Mohaqiq expressed concern about the latest spate of attacks in Kabul and said attackers should be dealt with seriously. “We hope our government acts responsibly on the issue of terrorism, adopts a clear agenda for peace.”

He assured that with the introduction of a new cabinet, security challenges would also be addressed.
