Russia stresses key role for UN in Afghanistan
Moscow also called for global support to Afghanistan for curbing the drug threat and promoting security, human rights and economic development, according to a statement from the Russian Embassy in Kabul.
On December 12, the UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution on a new NATO-led mission in Afghanistan, Resolute Support. The non-combat mission will take effect as of 2015 under a bilateral agreement between NATO and Afghanistan.
Given the chief coordinating role of the UN in international efforts to stabilise the situation in Afghanistan, the resolution urged the new NATO-led mission to closely cooperate with the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
Regional cooperation acquired special importance in this regard, a statement from the embassy said. The UN Security Council would monitor the implementation of the resolution on a regular basis, it added.
