Afghan flies his planes at Nimroz airport

ZARANJ (PAN): Five remote-controlled aircraft made by an Afghan on Wednesday made their test flight at the civil airport in southwestern Nimroz province.

“I have been working on making remote-controlled aircraft over the past six years. The planes are different from each other in weight and size,” Zmarai Hilali, the innovator who heads the provincial water and energy department, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

“One aircraft is 2.5 metres long and can fly at a speed of 70 kilometres per hour at a 7,000 metres altitude and can carry 15 kilograms of weight,” said Hilali, who used cork, wood and fabrics for making the plane.

Two of the aircraft consumed petrol and the rest are powered by small batteries, he said. “The planes can fly high but the problem is they disappear and cannot be controlled,” explained Hilali, who graduated from the engineering faculty of Kabul University.

About his future plans, the 24-year-old said he was working on a three-metre-long plane that would be flown by a pilot.

Governor Abdul Karim Brahvi, who saw Hilali flying his airplanes at the airport, said the government was ready to support the engineer.
