NEILY (Pajhwok): Officials of the environment organization warned on Wednesday that chopping of trees and other plants continued in Nili City, the capital of central Daikundi province, which was damaging the environment and natural beauty.

Local officials, tribal elders and environment officials gathered here to mark the Environment International Day titled: “Protection of environment guarantee better health for next generation.”

Speaking on the occasion, Environment Director Ali Madad Sahil said his directorate was committed to protect the natural environment.

Since the start of the year, hundreds of trees have been cut in Nili City to pave way for construction of residential compounds, he said, adding that the tragic development would leave far-reaching negative impact on the environment.

A special plant used in medicines was also on the verge of extinction because of its cutting off by locals in Daikundi Mountains which were being smuggled to Pakistan, he added.

He urged the government should work out a comprehensive strategy to protect the environment and maintain the natural beauty of the area.
