KABUL ministry officials said.
Haseeba Nighat, Agriculture Ministry National Horticulture and Livestock Project (NHLP) coordinator, said the programme had benefitted 1,668 women since last year in Kunduz and Takhar provinces.
Each woman received 30 hens and 250 kg of birdseed, she said, adding the women could sell 28 eggs per day, a business that helps improve their livelihood.
More women are interested in joining the programme, whose second phase will cover four other districts of the two provinces. Each woman will be given 100 hens.
Dur Bibi, a beneficiary from the Aliabad district of Kunduz province, said there had been positive changes in her live. “I have saved 12,000afs since start of the programme from selling meat and hens.”
Freshta Joyenda, a gender section official on the project, claimed the programme had been effective in improving local women’s living standards.
She said the programme had helped reduce violence against women, who earned more money to assist their families.
