KABUL Cup, commencing from Feb. 14.

Afghanistan Cricket Board Chairman Nasimullah Danish told a press conference in Kabul it was for the first time in Afghanistan’s history that Afghans would play in the World Cup.

The national side will play one-day friendly matches against India, the UAE and two Australian clubs ahead of the mega event jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Besides these matches, Danish said, the players would receive more training from their foreign coaches in all departments of the game to put finishing touches on their preparations for the World Cup. He said Afghanistan would play their first match against Bangladesh on Feb. 18

Danish said Afghanistan had many achievements in cricket both on national and international levels and would gain the ICC full membership status in the near future.

Meanwhile, the Australian Embassy in Kabul arranged a function in honour of the World Cup squad ahead of their departure for Australia.

Australian Ambassador to Kabul Matthew Anderson, ACB chairman Nasimullah Danish, ACB CEO Shafiqullah Stanikzai, players and their foreign coaches attended the programme.

Anderson wished Afghanistan successes and the best of luck during the World Cup. He said a large number of Afghans were living in Australia and they would throng cricket stadiums to support their national heroes.

He praised achievements the Afghan cricket team had made so far, especially in the recent past.

The envoy gifted a bat with signatures of Australian players to Afghan players at the end of the function.

Danish thanked Australia and the country’s embassy in Kabul for always supporting Afghanistan cricket team.
