Afghanistan Cricket Board spokesman Farid Hotak told Pajhwok Afghan News besides members of the national squad, ACB Chairman Nasimullah Danish and Chief Executive Shafiqullah Stanikzai met Ghani before their departure.
Support from the president had boosted the team’s morale, Danish was quoted as saying at the meeting. He urged the Ghani to visit Australia to watch Afghanistan’s opening match with Bangladesh.
Ghani welcome the cricketers and ACB officials, saying the entire nation prayed for their success in the mega event. The Afghans were proud of the team bringing laurels to their country, the president noted.
He said the Afghan ambassador to Australia had been directed to extend all possible support to the team. Ghani promised his administration would allot apartments to players.
Skipper Nabi Isakhel, thanking Ghani for encourage players, promised his boys would go flat-out to measure up to people’s expectations in their World Cup matches.
Later, CEO Abdullah saw off the Australia-bound squad at the Hamid Karzai International Airport. He hoped the national side would prove its mettle and bring more honours to the country.
The side will also play friendly matches against India, the UAE and two Australian clubs ahead of the extravaganza jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
The players will receive training from their foreign coaches in all departments of the game to put finishing touches on their preparations for the World Cup. Afghanistan will play their first match against Bangladesh on Feb. 18
A day earlier, the Australian Embassy in Kabul arranged a function in honour of the World Cup squad. Australian Ambassador to Kabul Matthew Anderson, ACB officials and foreign coaches attended the programme.
