Provincial councils salvage evaluation rights

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in a cabinet meeting granted the provincial council members the right of evaluation of performance of local departments.

Tawab Ghorzang, spokesman of the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG), said that the decision was made during a meeting of cabinet held on Wednesday.

The presidential decree in this connection would soon be released, he added. Some days back, the lower house decided provincial councils did not reserve the right to assess the performance of local departments. Nearly two dozen provincial councils (PCs) had closed their offices to protest the decion of the Wolesi Jirga.
