Ministry of Interior’s deputy spokesman Najib Danish told Pajhwok Afghan News the attack took place in the limits of the 5th police district at 6pm.
It was not immediately known how many attackers were involved in the assault that left five people dead and six others wounded.
The gunmen sprayed with bullets the followers of the Sufi tradition when they were offering prayers in the mosque before fleeing the scene. Danish said security forces had reached the area and were searching for the attackers.
But an official in the area police station, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News 10 people were killed and one injured in the attack.
The attack was carried out on Bahadur Agha prayer house in the Khwaja Jam area. Many residents of the area offer prayers in the khanqah.
There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack, the rare on Sufi minority.
