FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Ten insurgents have been killed during a clearing operation in the Darayem district of northeastern Badakhshan province, police claimed on Friday.
At least three militants were detained during Thursday’s offensive, Badakhshan police spokesman Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai told Pajhwok Afghan News.
As a result of the operations, Yamchian area — the last rebel hideout in the district — had been cleared, he said. Police also seized two machine guns and four Kalashnikov assault rifles.
Ahmadzai said police suffered no casualties during the operation that was carried out in response to requests from locals, who were often harassed by the fighters.
Abdul Wase, a resident of the area, said: “We are really tired of the rebels seeking food from us at odd hours. Their demands for meals thrice a day have frustrated us.”
