NIELI (Pajhwok): The Afghanistan in the province committed suicide during the last three years, officials said.

According to AIHRC, at least 123 females attempted to commit suicide in the last three years but 15 of them lost their lives. Another 47 had attempted suicide this year alone, the commission said.

The campaign against the trend will be lasted for a week in collaboration with Hajj and media activists.

Jawad Dadgar, AIHRC regional head, called the figures alarming and linked majority of such incidents to family disputes. “As a social issue, suicide has caught our attention and we should do everything to prevent it.”

Roshan 18 who attempted to commit suicide this year after her family refused a marriage proposal with her paternal cousin. Another young mother survived by a toddler, committed suicide in Sang Takht district because of family violence.

Shukria Tabish, a civil society activist, told Pajhwok Afghan News majority of the women in the province suffered from illiteracy and the campaign could prove vital to them. She added such campaigns would enhance their knowledge of rights and social responsibilities.
