MAHMOOD-I-RAQI (Pajhwok): At least 16 civilians wounded in a gun battle that sparked between insurgents and police in the Alasai district of central Kapisa province on Friday, residents and an official said.

The residents said rebels and police locked in a firefight in the bazaar when a rocket shell hit people gathered for Friday prayers.

Qais Qaderi, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that people were gathered for prayers at the district central mosque when a police check post came under fire by militants.

Both the sides traded heavy gun fire, which resulted in the injuries of 10 civilians, he added. However, he said that security forces remained unhurt. Afghan security forces took control of the area.

He said that the wounded were evacuated to the nearest state-run clinic. But Attaullah, an eyewitness, said that 16 civilians had been injured.
