TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): With 24 newly-trained midwives ready to serve in central Uruzgan province, officials hoped on Saturday that mother and child health would improve there.

Officials told Pajhwok Afghan News that it was the fourth batch of midwives trained and appointed in the province. Sher Bacha Orguni, the deputy governor, said the midwives would help improve mother and child health situation.

He said though many locals avoided letting girls study, parents of the midwives were worth praising for encouraging their daughters to train and help others.

Dr. Khan Agha Miakhel, director of public health, said the mother and child mortality rate had already seen a significant decline. He cited the availability of more midwives as a major reason.
