MAIDAN SHAHAR (Pajhwok): A volleyball tournament featuring 44 squads got under way in the capital of central Maidan Wardak province on Friday.

The three-week event is aimed to select the provincial team, according to the governor’s spokesman, who told Pajhwok Afghan news players from all districts were participating.

Director of Sports Ainullah Haqbin said 10 outfits would compete daily during the competition, sponsored by a private firm called United Europe. At the conclusion of the League-system tournament, 26 probables will be picked for the provincial team.

Ashraf Khan, one of the contestants, told Pajhwok Afghan News Maidan Wardak had outstanding volleyballers, but they had been deprived of the required facilities. They would be able to display their talent during the event, he hoped.
