KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): At least 30 militants and an Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier have been killed in security operation launched in southern Kandahar province, an official said Tuesday.
Muhsin Sultani, spokesman of the 205th Attal Military Corps, told Pajhwok Afghan News the offensive was conducted in Zhirai, Ghorak and Maiwand districts of the province.
He confirmed 30 militants were killed, another detained and and some weapons and ammunitions were recovered during the offensive in the past 48 hours.
An ANA soldier was also died and another wounded in exchange of fire with rebels, he said, adding the operation was launched before the weather gets warm to purge the area of insurgents.
Gen. Abdul Hamid Hamid, commander of the 205th Attal Military Corps, said the operation was underway in four provinces of southern region including Kandahar, Helmand, Uruzgan and Zabul.
The offensive would take six months to complete. The militants have suffered heavy casualties and many areas were cleared of roadside bombs, he said.
Taliban militants, however, have not commented yet commented on the operation.
