AIBAK (Pajhwok): Some 3,200 people have completed basic literacy courses and 90 others graduated from electricity classes in northern Samangan province, officials said on Monday.

Literacy project head Ferozudding Ahmadi, told Pajhwok Afghan News the 3,200 people, half of them women, studied in 166 courses. Funded by Sweden, the courses were held across Samangan for a 9-month duration.

Abdullah, 39, one of the graduates, said: “Thanks to this course, now I can read, write and understand signs.” Last year, more than 3,000 people completed such courses across the province.

About 4.5 million people have benefitted from the literacy programs in the last 13 years. Bur 7 million of the country’s population still remains illiterate.

Meanwhile, 90 other students graduated from a vocational institute in Samangan. Abdul Hakim Hamnawa, head of the institute, said the students, including 20 girls, studied for two years.
