KABUL’s 95th Independence Day on Tuesday, organisers said.
Sixty runners took place in the race from the Darul Aman Palace to Deh Mazang Square, said the chief of the Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) that arranged the event.
Participants of the marathon tried in a wholesome fashion to grab top positions during the 42-kilometre marathon, Rahmatullah Zahid told Pajhwok Afghan News.
“Youth should remember August 19, a day of great significance in our country. The history of this day and our heroes should always be remembered proudly,” he remarked.
Zahid sought credit for MYO for organising the event — the first of its kind — marking the Independence Day. He stressed similar competitions should take place on a regular basis.
Participant Baryalai Saeedi told Pajhwok most of the people seemed to have forgotten the history of their independence struggle. The maiden race was a good reminder of the sacrifices rendered by their elders, he believed.
Seven of the 60 athletes were able to traverse more than 42-km distance, according to Zahid, who said Ghulam Mustafa, Idris Omaidi and Baryalai Saeedi won the top three positions respectively.
