5 ICRC workers kidnapped in Herat

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The Taliban have kidnapped five employees of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in western Herat province, officials said on Saturday.

Rafiullah Stanikzai, the ICRC spokesperson in Kabul, confirmed the workers had been kidnapped by armed rebels two days earlier.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News the individuals were working at the Herat office. Refusing to give further details, he said Efforts were underway to secure their release.

Police spokesman Col. Abdul Rauf Ahmadi confirmed the incident, saying: “Four local employees of ICRC were kidnapped in the Khum Sultan Khan locality of Adraskan district two days ago.”

With the Taliban yet to comment on the incident, the police spokesman said the humanitarian workers had been to the area without informing police
