MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Eight newly-constructed community centres, benefitting nearly 1,450 families, have been inaugurated in northern Samangan province, an official said on Thursday.
A spokesman for the National Solidarity Programme (NSP) in the northern zone, Farid Ahmad Sadat, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the welfare projects had been completed in Hazrat Sultan district.
The projects included eight community centres, five reservoirs of clean drinking water and construction and blacktopping of a two-kilometre road, he said.
Funded by the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, the schemes cost 14.9 million afghanis, with locals contributing 10 percent of the cost, he added.
Sadat said the projects were executed in Mominabad, Baig Mohammad Qodod, Alikhel, Kokah Balaq Bala, Kokah Balaq Payeen, Khwaja Parsa, Larkharbi and Shorqal villages.
A resident of the Alikhel village, Mohammad Din, said their area had no proper venue for holding jirgas and gatherings and the community centre resolved that problem. He said villagers held their meetings at the centre to discuss problems facing them.
The NSP spokesman said 1334 projects had been completed so far under the programme in Samangan’s 418 villages. Work on another 300 projects in a number of districts was underway, he said.
