ZARANJ/KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Police rescued a five-year-old boy and detained two suspects in connection with his abduction in southwestern Nimroz province, an official said on Monday.

The boy identified as Naveed was abducted on Sunday evening from Zaranj, the provincial capital, and was recovered an hour after being abducted, Rahmatullah Nasir, the provincial National Directorate of Security (NDS) chief told Pajhwok Afghan news.

He said the child was reunited with his family and the two suspects detained with pistols were being interrogated.

Family of the rescued child lauded police for securing a timely release of their child. The mother said two armed men grabbed her son in front of their house gate and threatened her with death if she offered resistance.

The botched abduction attempt came a week later police rescued a girl from her kidnappers elsewhere in the province.

Elsewhere, police detained an alleged ringleader of a kidnapping gang with his faced covered in a veil in the Khanabad district of northern Kunduz province.

Police chief Ghulam Mustafa Muhseni said Sardar aka Mujahid was arrested in the Chahar Toot area following a tip-off.

He said the detainee was leader of a group of kidnappers and was allegedly involved in the abduction of businessmen in neighbouring Takhar province.
