ACSEN backs PCs to supervise departments

Feb 05, 2015 - 17:15

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Afghanistaninfo-icon Civil Societyinfo-icon Elections Network (ACSEN) on Thursday demanded the president and Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon to empower the provincial councils to supervise and evaluate the performance of local departments.

Sayyed Nasir Mosavi, spokesman of the ACSEN, said they supported the provincial council members’ decision of shutting down their offices to protest the decision of the Wolesi Jirga.

Earlier, the lower house announced barring the provincial councils from overseeing the performance of local institutions.

He said the prevailing situation needed decentralization of power from centre to provinces and any changes to law should ensure greater participation of the people.

On Tuesday, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in a meeting with provincial council members agreed local bodies would retain their power to oversee the performance of local departments.
