WALES (Pajhwok): Defence Minister Bismillah Khan Mohammadi on Thursday said the international community had increased by one billion dollars from $4.1 billion to $5.1 billion in annual aid to Afghanistan.

Mohammadi was speaking to reporters after attending the first day of a two-day NATO summit that began in Wales, the UK, on Thursday morning.

The alliance’s future role in Afghanistan and the situation in Ukraine are the main tops of the gathering that brought together leaders from 60 countries, including US president Barack Obama and UK premier David Cameron.

Mohammadi said he gave the NATO summit participants information about the latest political and security situations in Afghanistan.

The defence minister said he complained to the summit about the non-stop rocket attacks from Pakistan.

He said US president Barack Obama made clear at the summit that the $1 billion additional aid would be for three years and Afghan forces would receive $5.1 billion from now on.

To a question, Mohammadi said what they achieved from the summit was beyond their expectations.

Before heading for Wales, the minister said, he met the two presidential candidates and he was assured that they would sign the security agreements with the US and NATO.

He said NATO secretary general Rasmussen read out a co-signed message from Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai at the gathering.

In the letter, the two candidates reaffirmed their pledge to work for the formation a national unity government and that they would accept the election result.

About reports that a member of the Afghan delegation applied for asylum soon after landing in the UK, Mohammadi said he was aware of the news, but the asylum seeker was not from their delegates.
