Jul 30, 2014 - 16:38

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghanistaninfo-icon thrashed Zimbabwe by 35 runs in their first four-day match played in the nation’s capital Harare, an Afghan cricket board official said on Wednesday.

Afghanistan Cricket Board’s spokesman Farid Hotak told Pajhwok Afghan News the Afghan-A team members piled up 105 runs in their first innings and restricted Zimbabwe-A to 145 runs, thanks to outstanding bowling by Farid Malak and Yamin Ahmadzai, who shared five wickets apiece.

In their second innings, the Afghans scored 275 runs for the loss of five wickets, with Najibullah Zadran hitting a valiant 98. Najib Tarakai also played well and contributed 53 runs to the side, Hotak said.

However, Zadran was dismissed for 99 when the game resumed for a third day on Tuesday, but Fazl Niazi helped Afghanistan reach 321 runs. He made 41 runs.

Afghanistan fell short by 40 runs in their first innings against Zimbabwe and set the hosts 242 runs target in the second innings.

Zimbabwe scored 204 runs by the end of the day on Tuesday for the loss of six wickets. Mirwais Ashraf clinched four wickets.

When the game resumed on Wednesday (today), Zimbabwe needed 54 runs to win and Afghanistan needed four wickets. But the remaining four Zim batsmen could not face the blitz of Afghan bowlers.

Ashraf grabbed four wickets and Yamin Ahmadzai three.

ACB chief executive Shahzada Massoud congratulated the Afghan nation over the historic victory against a Test-playing side.

Earlier, Afghanistan thrashed Zimbabwe by 100 runs in Bulawayo to draw their one-day international series 2-2.
