KABUL’s junior team on Monday left for Qatar to participate in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Under-16 Elite Cup, an official said.

The Afghans would defend their title during the weeklong event, beginning on October 22 in Doha, Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) spokesman Farid Hotak told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Organised by the Qatar Cricket Association (QCA), the 40-overs-a-side event will be contested by the under-16 teams from Afghanistan, Hong Kong, Iran, Kuwait and Qatar.

The matches are scheduled to be played at the Mesaied Industrial City Ground and the West End Park Stadium. Two games will be played daily, the first one beginning at 9 am and the second at 3pm.

A day-night encounter, the opener would be played at the West End Park Stadium between Qatar and Iran, Hotak said. The opening ceremony is slated for Wednesday at the West End Park.

ACB Chief Executive Officer Noor Mohammad Murad told the departing cricketers that they were the country’s future stars. He hoped the side, showing determination and discipline, would retain the championship.
